This spring, after dozens of various events within the last months, the Baltic Philharmonic is offering a lighter repertoire.
April begins with a concert on 4 April at 19.00, organised in co-operation with the Association for Helping Surgically Ill Children. The Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in the company of a soloist of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Sondra Radvanovsky. The famous opera arias will be conducted by Gianluca Marciano.
Then, like every year, the graduates of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk will perform together with the Gdańsk Symphonic Orchestra, this time conducted by Tadeusz Wojciechowski. Special auditions were held in the Academy of Music, in which the soloists of the evening were selected: Maciej Kułakowski –the cello (The Cello Concerto by A. Dvorak), Wojciech Ulanowski – the accordion (Concerto Classicoby Mikołaj Majkusiak), and Jan Lewandowski – the cello (The Variations on a Rococo Theme by P. Tchaikovsky). Another competition laureate is Ewa Miriam Saczko, a composer, whose composition will be presented during the concert (Concerto for Orchestra, Part I Largo). The event is held on Friday, 5 April, at 19.00.
In keeping with tradition, a week later, on Friday, 12 April, at 19.15, this season’s second Pope’s Concerto is held.This time, it’s closer to the anniversary of our Polish Pope’s birthday. The First Violinist of the Baltic Philharmonic Symphonic Orchestra, Robert Kwiatkowski, will perform as a soloist and conductor, conducting his fellow musicians during the concert. The repertoire includes compositions of K. Penderecki, A. von Webern, F. Schubert and A. Part. Narrations from texts of St John Paul II will be read by Jakub Kornacki. Place: Oliwa Archcathedral. Free admission.
On Sunday, 14 April, at 10.00 and 11.30, the Philharmonic is holding music workshops for children and their parents entitled ‘Fairy-Tale Philharmonic’. The line-up includes Eduartfun Team – an ensemble composed of: the guitar, the piano, and the vocal, who will play with the young audience.
On 14 April, at 17.00, a concert of Penderecki Piano Trio is held. The concert is a part of L. van Beethoven Easter Festival and is one of the concerts held outside the festival main stage in Warsaw.
On Thursday, 25 April, at 19.00, the Philharmonic is hosting the Pomeranian Artistic Award Gala. It’s the most important award granted by the local government of Pomerania Province to artists affiliated with the region. It honours selected outstanding cultural events held in 2018. The award is granted in three categories: Artistic Creation, Artistic Hope of Pomerania and Cultural Patronage of Private Businesses. Candidates are nominated by cultural institutions and establishments. In the past, the award was often granted to artists propagating classical music in the region – we’ll see if it’s the same this year, too. After the official gala part, a wonderful concert is held. The repertoire includes Symphony in G Minor KV 550 by W.A. Mozart performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra and Piano Concerto by M. Ravel (for the Left Hand). The soloist will be Kordian Góra, and the Orchestra will be conducted by George Tchitchinadze.
