The artistic season in the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk is slowly coming to an end. It was full of musical thrills and concerts of prominent artists and ensembles. For June, the Philharmonic has planned four symphonic concerts and several events for Children’s Day.
On 7 June, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic performs its final concert of this artistic season. The repertoire includes Piano Concerto No. 5 by L. van Beethoven and Symphony No. 1 by G. Mahler. The soloist of the evening is Elisso Wirsaladze, a brilliant Georgian pianist of the elder generation.
On the two following Sundays, 16 and 23 June, at 18.00, the Philharmonic puts on promenade concerts. The concerts are divided into two parts, one of which is held in a concert hall and the other – on the summer stage arranged at the car park on Ołowianka on the side of the footbridge. The repertoire of the first concert includes scores from films produced on Caucasus between 1950 and 1980. Next, IRIAO band performs outdoors.
The concert on 23 June is also dedicated to film scores, but the ones more related to Hollywood, including Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Some scores from the Polish cinema will also be presented, including orchestra parts from ‘Noce i Dnie’ and ‘Szpieg w masce’ (for example, ‘Miłość ci wszystko wybaczy’) sung by Katarzyna Jaracz. During the second part, ‘Chłopcy kontra Basia’ band performs on the summer stage.
On 28 June at 20.00, in the Archcathedral Basilica in Oliwa, the inauguration of the 62nd International Organ Festival is held. The Philharmonic Orchestra performs with soloists, such as Hanna Dys (organ) and Mirosław Pachowicz (bassoon). The musicians will play the compositions of S. Moniuszko, A. Panufnik, and M. Surzyński. This year, we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of S. Moniuszko’s birthday, and his compositions are performed all over Poland to mark the occasion.
For the beginning of the month, the Philharmonic has also prepared an educational program for children. On Sunday, 2 June, the Philharmonic organises popular music workshops for children and their parents for the last time this year. The concert O-ku-la-la-ryon 2 June is dedicated to W. Szomański’s compositions illustrating J. Tuwim’s poems. Between 3 and 4 June, for the last time this year, the Philharmonic holds concerts for schools with singers, dancers, and… an accordion quartet.
